List of Cool Latin Phrases

Someone recently introduced the phrase "persona non grata" to me (aka. "person not welcome" in Latin). Such a funny and useful phrase, with so many applications to real-world conversations. I immediately dreamed of douchily dropping all these Latin phrases into conversations - so much ripe potential - that I had to look up more Latin phrases immediately.

disce quasi semper victurus vive quasi cras moriturus

learn as if you will always live, live as if you will die tomorrow

persona non grata (person not pleasing)

a person who is not welcome/accepted

pons asinorium (bridge of asses)

any obstacle that stupid people find hard to cross

gesta non verba

actions not words

astra inclinant, sed non obligant (the stars incline us, they do not bind us)

Though fate – whether determined by the stars, the gods or something else entirely – may nudge us in a certain direction, we are never forced in it, that free will exists and the decision of what to do in any circumstance is ultimately our own

semper fidelis (always faithful)

always faithful or always loyal

cave canem (beware dog)

beware the dog, found in mosaics in Pompeii

bono malum superate (good surpasses evil)

overcome evil with good

deus ex machina (god from the machine)

just sounds pretty damn cool.

carpe diem (pluck the day [as it is ripe])

seize the day, make the most of the moment/present

discendo discimus (by teaching, we learn) 

through teaching we learn

vincit qui se vincit (he conquers who conquers himself)

emphasises the importance of getting yourself under control - your mind, desires, urges - before you can take on the outside world
